Naughty, But Nice, Night Out for Girls.
by Ann Peacock
Tales of a Modern Woman
Sunday Herald Sun, March 20 2005
With a title such as Life After Dick, it may not be the best show to introduce the younger people, dear Aunt Charlotte or your local priest to the world of comedy, Melbourne Comedy Festival Style. But for a fun and perhaps different night out with the girls, pencil this production in the diary and get ready to laugh. The season, at the Crown Showroom, starts on Thursday and runs until April 17.
To find out more, I spoke to one of the three fantastic women, Janelle Koenig, who star in this production. In her bio, Janelle describes herself as '30, single, still looking and testing...'
Do stand-ups and relationships work?
"I find it hard being on stage talking about a guy I'm with - and so do they," Janelle jokes. As she is romantically unencomboured, Janelle assures me she is more than ready to let loose with her "take" on men, women and the battle of the sexes. Her tell-all style, honest delivery and cheeky songs won her a spot in the state final of the Raw Comedy competition in 2003. Since then she's joined the ranks of Melbourne favourite female comedians.
With her for this show are Bev Killick and Christine Basil - two women who might be familiar to comedy loving audiences as the openers for that very cheeky show, Puppetry of the Penis. "There's definitely more women doing comedy these days," Janelle says.
Audiences should expect a show that is, in Janelle's words, "pretty forward thinking and R-rated". The press release describes it as Sex and the City meets Desperate Housewives.
It sounds as if it will appeal to those with a wicked sense of humour. And Janelle believes it has the sort of material a lot of women will relate to. "As the title suggests, there will be a lot of blue material, but that doesn't mean it's not intelligent," Janelle says.
